元々はスコットランドの漁師の歌でしたが、その後アメリカの北東部マサチューセッツ州のグロスターという港町でも大変流行した
そうです。当時ボストンやニューヨークなどにおいては捕鯨に繰り出す勇敢な船員を多数募集しており、この歌で、海で働く楽しさを
宣伝したようです。グロスターはボストンのやや北の港町、この町でも捕鯨船員を集めるために歌われえたものと思われます。
